Amen

So one of the projects that I've been assigned as the newest Graduate Student Researcher here at the Plant and Environmental Sciences (PES) dept at UC Davis is to maintain and promote a set of public education demonstration bins outside our lovely building. This neat arrangement of cement planter boxes features samples of California's principle field crops, changing according to the season. I've been planting the newest rotations in and it will be my responsibility to keep them alive throughout the quarter, if not the rest of the year. Also, I have to research each crop enough to design a placard that curious passerby can glance at, and so be informed. Extension: DONE!

Apparently other students have been assigned to this project before me, and according to my major professor, have failed miserably at following through with it. As a result, I have some legwork done for me already on the signs and information, but it's not complete.

While scanning through these files and trimming them down to what I wanted to use, I found this gem of a rough draft regarding the purpose of barley as a field crop:

"Barley is the principle ingredient, and most used for, most beers. Though beer can also be made out of wheat and other grains, these types of beers are lame and pansy, and therefore barley was principally created by god for beer. To me, this proves the existence of god and he is good. All hail god and beer."

Mad props to my procrastinating predecessor for giving Mike and me a laugh here in the lab today.
