Where's Bill Nye when you need him??

An e-mail to the plant sciences list-serve from the Department Chair, Dr. Chris VanKessel (tall, lanky Dutchman) reads:

"Hi All,
Just to remind you we have our regular Plant Science seminar today at noon.
Ariel Vicente, Post Doctoral fellow in Plant Sciences, will speak on

Effect of overexpression of polygalacturonase and/or expansin on rin tomato cell wall degradation.

Chris"

...blink

Just a hilarious sample of what goes on here daily at the research university. Though all you plebians might get a laugh out of it.

For some reason I don't have the nerve to spend my lunch break at this particular seminar...

what does that even mean?

my guess is probably they tested spraying some enzyme on tomatoes to keep them from rotting so fast during transport or sitting on the grocery store shelves. but, useful as those findings might be, it's not like the lecture would make any sense anyways...

so why couldn't they just say that? i realize they wouldn't look quite as smart that way, but they'd definitely interest more people.

actually, that's a good point. if people think you're smart, they'll believe just about anything. back in high school, i once had the majority of my math class (not including the teacher, who wasn't in on the conversation and would have known better) that i had an uncle who was born on a double leap year, which happen every 2,544 years.
